The 39th annual 'Air Race Classic' will have pilots making their way to Kirksville in late June

KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- An air race to be held this summer will put Kirksville Regional Airport on the map, and bring an economic boost to the city. The 39th annual 'Air Race Classic' will have pilots making their way to Kirksville in late June. The Classic is a transcontinental race for female pilots, originally started by women, including Amelia Earhart.
Kirksville Regional Airport Director Glenn Balliew says that he is excited the Classic has an interest in stopping in Kirksville. Balliew adds that the race will bring a number of followers that will be staying in and spending money in Kirksville.
"Kirksville will probably be an overnight stay for most of these planes so they will be renting motel rooms and eating out, buying gas from us. It's a really prestigious top race, so we are looking forward to that and we are in the planning stages of that right now," Balliew said.
The race will kick off on June 22 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and conclude on the 25th in Fairhope, Alabama. Kirksville is the 9th stop for the pilots racing in the Classic.
